MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - A motorist was killed when his car collided with a Hiawatha light-rail train in south Minneapolis.

According to Metro Transit, the collision happened about 6:30 p.m. Friday at the East 26th Street crossing near Hiawatha Avenue.

The victim, identified as a 55-year-old man, died at the scene. He was the only person in the car.

The train dragged the car about a block before coming to a rest.

Metro Transit says the motorist apparently was trying to drive under the lowered crossing arms.

A fire ignited after the collision, but no one aboard the train was hurt.

Friday evening light-rail service was disrupted after the collision.
