UNDATED -- It's going to cost you more if you want to fly for the upcoming holidays. But, there are some ways you can save a little money.

The average price for domestic flights is about 4-percent higher than last year. But, you might be able to recover those costs if you use these tips.

First, book your flight early. The longer you wait, the higher the price will likely be.  If it drops, it won't be by much.

Secondly, be flexible. If you can leave later and return earlier you can save quite a bit of money.

Look for connecting flights as they are cheaper than direct flights.

Consider flying into smaller, regional airports then driving. The cost difference might be worth the car rental.

Pick two different airlines...one to fly in and another to fly out. One-way tickets may be cheaper overall.

Consider the 24-hour rule where most airlines allow you make a reservation and cancel it within 24 hours if you find a cheaper rate the next day.

Search multiple websites, not just the big three of Expedia, Orbitz and Travelocity.

Finally, check frequently on hotel and rental car prices as these tend to change more often. Also, be sure to ask about discounts for senior citizens, Triple-A members or military service.
