ST. CLOUD  (AP) - An interim president has been named for St. Cloud State University.

The board of trustees of Minnesota State Colleges and Universities on Wednesday named Ashish Vaidya interim president. Vaidya had been acting president since the death of president Earl Potter III in a car crash last week.

Vaidya's appointment is for a two-year term, effective Thursday. He has served as provost and vice president for academic affairs at St. Cloud State since last year.

Minnesota State Colleges and Universities Chancellor Steven Rosenstone says Vaidya has shown himself to be "a gifted leader" who will provide "sound and energetic leadership."

Potter had served as SCSU president since 2007.
