MINNEAPOLIS (AP) -- A consultant is reporting the University of Minnesota has an annual economic impact in the state of $8.6 billion. The regents are scheduled to learn more about it on Friday.

Sections of the report by consulting company Tripp Umbach were released last week. It concluded that every dollar invested in the university by the state generates $13.20 in the statewide economy.

Paul Umbach and top university staff members are scheduled to present more details from the report during a special work session before the regents go into their regular meeting.

The report figures to play a part in the university's campaign to avoid big cuts in state support as the Legislature looks to eliminate a $5 billion deficit.
