Former SCSU Wrestler’s Son Member of 2012 Olympic Team

Former Husky wrestler Dave Hazewinkel's son Sam Hazewinkel is a member of the 2012 USA Olympic wrestling team. Dave competed for the USA at the 1968 and 1972 Olympics after an outstanding career at St. Cloud State University. They are the first father-son duo to wrestle for team USA in the Olympics.

Central Minnesota Has Strong Ties to Summer Olympics

The Games of the XXX (30th) Olympiad start on July 27th in London, England. Stearns County is fortunate enough to have two women competing this year -- Alise Post of St. Cloud is in the BMX bike competition and Amanda Smock of Melrose will be in Track and Field's Triple Jump. You might be surprised to learn that this area has had quite a few Olympians over the years.

Love Makes U.S. Men’s Basketball Team

Timberwolves forward Kevin Love has made the United State men's basketball team. The 6'9 Love is expected to play power forward and center for the United States at the London Olympics. Love led the Timberwolves in scoring and rebounding in 2011-2012.

Melrose’s Smock Wins at U.S. Olympic Trials

Melrose native Amanda Smock (Tieschafer) won the women's triple-jump at the U.S. Olympic trials Monday night in Eugene, Oregon. Smock is headed to London for the Summer Olympics. Her best jump was her first, 45 feet and 9 inches.

UPDATE: Melrose Native Heading to the Olympics

Melrose native Amanda (Thieschafer) Smock has qualified for the Olympics later this summer in London. Twenty-nine year old Smock won the triple jump this (Monday) evening at the U.S. Track and Field Trials in Eugene, Oregon.

Gold medalist Peter Vanderkaay is hosting a swim clinic next Thursday at the St. Cloud YMCA. He won gold medals at the 2004 and 2008 games, and is currently training for the 2012 games.
