Now that the Catholic Church has selected a new Pope, Bishop John Kinney of the St. Cloud Diocese has resumed planning for his retirement. Kinney sent in his letter of resignation when he turned 75 years old last June, which is required by the church.
Bishop John Kinney says Pope Benedict XVI's resignation this (Monday) morning came as a "complete surprise" to him. A Pope resigning hasn't happened in 600 years.
The bishop of the Diocese of St. Cloud is submitting his resignation to Pope Benedict XVI because he's reached the mandatory retirement age of 75. Bishop John Kinney probably won't be going anywhere very soon.
