Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, February 7, 2015 at St. Louis Catholic Church in Paynesville, for Melvin M. Spanier, age 82, of Paynesville. Mel passed away February 1, 2015 at the St. Cloud Hospital. Burial will take place in the St. Louis Parish Cemetery in Paynesville with full military honors.

Relatives and friends may call from 4-8 p.m. on Friday, February 6 and one hour prior to services on Saturday, both at the St. Louis Catholic Church in Paynesville.

Mel was born April 24, 1932 in Lake Henry, MN to Herb and Erma (Lahr) Spanier. He was the oldest of eleven children, and graduated from Paynesville High School. He served honorably in the Unites States Army from 1955-1957. While in the army, he served a tour of duty in Korea as a radio operator. He married Etheline Hoppe on October 19, 1957, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in New Munich. He was an active member of St. Louis Catholic Church and sang in their choir. He was also a member of St. Louis Knights of Columbus Council 3820, Catholic United Financial and Paynesville American Legion Post 271.

Mel was employed by the ROCORI School System for 24 years, where he enjoyed interacting with the many students and staff. He was known for his constant smile, his love of singing, and his well-manicured yard. His uplifting and sunny disposition was infectious to all who knew him. He was most proud of the accomplishments and successes of his children and grandchildren.

Mel is survived by his wife Etheline of Paynesville, children Denise (Greg) McRae of Amston, CT, Steven (Becky) Spanier of Fargo, ND, Pamela Bremseth of Plymouth, MN, Susan (Patrick) Tucker of Omaha, NE, and Douglas (Krista) Spanier of West St. Paul, MN, 22 grandchildren, brothers and sisters Evelyn (Darrel) Sorenson, Richard (Rita) Spanier, Mary Johnson, Orville (Susan) Spanier, Judy (Paul) Lieser, Mike (Kathy) Spanier, and Kevin (Bonnie) Spanier.

Preceding Mel in death were his parents Herb and Erma and brothers David, Roger and Cyril Spanier.
