ST. CLOUD -- Phase one of the Stearns County jail remodel is complete.

Phase one included reconstructing the first floor of the Law Enforcement Center to better accommodate the female housing unit and work release inmates.

The previous space on the second floor was to large for the current number of inmates the jail housed.

The remodel added 11 beds, for a total of 20, to the female unit and reduces the need to pay for transporting women to other county jails.

Crews are now beginning phase two which includes expansion of the booking area and nine additional cells to the male inmate facility.

Total cost for the jail remodel is about $5.1 million-dollars.

Renovation began in January and is expected to be completed early next year.
