Grand Jury Indicts Demetreus McGinnis on First Degree Murder Charge
ST. CLOUD -- A St. Cloud man accused of shooting and killing a man outside the Sartell Sprint store last March will stand trial for first degree murder after a Stearns County grand jury handed up the indictment today.
23-year-old Demetreus McGinnis has been indicted on charges of first degree intentional murder, two counts of 2nd degree murder, 3rd degree murder, possession of a firearm by a prohibited person and 3rd degree witness tampering.
McGinnis is accused of shooting Maurice Galvin Jr. in the chest near the Sartell Sprint store March 13th. Galvin later died at St. Cloud Hospital.
Prosecutors allege McGinnis was selling drugs and shot Galvin in the chest when the deal went wrong. The lawyer for McGinnis argues McGinnis was working at the store when Galvin and another man came to rob him. The defense says Galvin pulled out a gun and threatened McGinnis. That's when a struggle broke out and Galvin was shot.
McGinnis remains in the Stearns County Jail on $2,000,000 bail. He's expected to make his next court appearance on the indictments Wednesday.
