Water Main Breaks Near Target Center
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Crews are cleaning up after a water main burst near Target Center in downtown Minneapolis, opening up a sinkhole and leaving the arena without water for several hours.
The 16-inch pipe burst around 6:30 a.m. Tuesday. A few other nearby businesses also lost water,
City officials estimate that 90,000 gallons of water gushed out, and opened up a car-sized sinkhole in the street.
Water foreman Mark Ebert says recent rains could have caused the ground to shift.
Traffic was detoured around the site.
It’s the second major water main break this year in Minneapolis. Some 14 million gallons of water spewed into the northeastern corner of downtown Jan. 3 when a backhoe ruptured a 36-inch water main. About 50 vehicles in a nearby post office ramp were destroyed.
