ST. CLOUD -- Purple coated parking spaces are popping up throughout the St. Cloud area.

Three parking spaces in town are designated as reserved for combat wounded, Purple Heart Medal recipients only.

One of the spaces is at Texas Roadhouse in Waite Park, one is at the Sauk Rapids VFW and the newest space was installed at Lake George near the Vietnam War Memorial, all were put up by the Vietnam Veterans of America (VVA) Chapter 290.

President of the Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 290, Bob Behrens says the organization is converting parking spaces as part of an on going project that will continue into next year.

"It's a project that's called Operation LZ Purple, that's [Lake George space] the last one that we'll be doing this year but starting next year we will be going throughout St. Cloud, Sauk Rapids and Sartell to different businesses and we will be doing the same also."

LZ is short for the military term landing zone.

Behrens says the project is funded by local Vietnam veterans and paint for the space was donated by Advanced Auto Parts.

"Of course VVA Chapter 290 donated the sign and plus all the labor for it and so it worked out well."

Behrens says he hopes the city will soon be filled with the reserved spaces.
