The St. John's football team began their season with a 34-0 shutout win over Northwestern College Saturday afternoon in Collegeville. St. John's led 27-0 at halftime. Stephen Johnson ran for 114 yards and a touchdown and Nick Schneider ran for 34 yards and a touchdown for the Johnnies. Connor Bruns threw for 137 yards and 2 touchdowns for St. John's. John Ries was 6-10 passing for 43 yards for St. John's.
The St. John's football team has had 4 practices and hasn't settled on a starting quarterback yet. Offensive Coordinator Jim Gagliardi says Junior John Ries of Wayzata because of experience has the lead for the job as of now but the Johnnies are still considering 3 to 4 other options. Connor Bruns of Baltimore, Maryland and Tyler Greguson of Rochester Lourdes are other top options to start at quarterback.
The St. Cloud State and St. John's football programs are receiving preseason recognition. St. Cloud State is ranked #11 in the Sporting News Division II preseason poll and is ranked #12 in Lindy's Division II preseason poll. SCSU was 10-3 in 2010.
