Twins Add Gibson, Hicks to 40-Man Roster
The Twins have added 8 players to their 40-man Major League roster and invite each player to spring training with a chance to make the team. Among the 8 players added are righthanded starting pitcher Kyle Gibson, who is coming off elbow surgery. Gibson was 3-2 with a 5.40 ERA pitching in the Arizona Fall League.
Cubs Sign Former Twin, Scott Baker
Scott Baker is not returning to the Twins. Baker agreed to terms on a 1-year $5.5 Million contract with incentives for another $1.5 Million. Baker sat out all of the 2012 season after having Tommy John surgery in the spring. Baker may not be ready when the regular season starts. The Twins were trying to re-sign Baker after declining the $9.2 Million option for this season.
Twins Sign a Pair of Minor Leaguers
Twins Sign Deduno, Vaszquez; Pursue James Shields
The Twins signed right-handed starting pitchers Sam Deduno and Esmerling Vasquez to minor league contracts. The 29-year old Deduno was 6-5 with a 4.44 ERA for the Twins in 2012. The 28-year old Vasquez was 0-2 with a 5.68 ERA for the Twins in 2012. Both players are expected to compete for a starting spot in the Twins rotation this spring.
Twins Decline Option on Scott Baker Making Him a Free Agent
The Twins declined to pick up the $9.25 Million team option on Scott Baker's contract making him eligible from free agency. The Twins would like Baker to return but not for that price. Baker missed all of the 2012 season after getting ligament replacement surgery on his elbow (Tommy John Surgery). The 31-year old Baker has a 63-48 record with a 4.15 ERA while with the Twins in his career.
Twins Promote Brunansky, Cuellar, and Hire Steinbach
The Twins have promoted Tom Brunansky from triple-A hitting coach to major league hitting coach, have promoted Bobby Cuellar from triple-A pitching coach to major league bullpen coach and have hired former Twin Terry Steinbach as bullpen coach and catching instructor. Brunansky was the starting rightfielder for the Twins during their 1987 World Series Championship team.
Twins Fire 3 Coaches and Head Athletic Trainer
The Twins did not renew the c0ntracts of 3 coaches and their head athletic trainer. Longtime bullpen coach Rick Stelmaszek, 3rd base coach Steve Liddle and first base coach Jerry White and head coach athletic trainer Rick McWane all had their contacts not renewed for 2013. The Twins also reassigned bench coach Scott Ulger and hitting coach Joe Vavra. Ulger will work the outfielders and Vavra will work with the infielders.
Twins End Season With 2-1 Loss at Toronto
The Twins lost 2-1 at Toronto Wednesday night to close the season with a 66-96 record. Brandon Morrow struckout 11 in 8 innings with 3 hits and 1 earned run allowed to get the win for the Blue Jays. Scott Diamond allowed 5 hits and 2 earned runs in 5 innings to take the loss and drop to 12-9. Ben Revere had 3 of the 4 Twins' hits and Matt Carson drove in the lone Twins' run.
Blue Jays Beat Twins 4-3
The Twins lost their 2nd to last game of the season 4-3 in Toronto to the Blue Jays Tuesday night. Toronto went out to a 4-0 lead in the 5th inning. Denard Span hit a 2-run homerun in the 6th inning and Alexi Casilla added a RBI single for the Twins in the 7th inning. Ben Revere had 3 hits for Minnesota. Anthony Swarzak started the game for the Twins and allowed 4 earned runs in 5 innings to take the loss and drop to 3-6.
