UNDATED --  The familiar sight of orange barrels and cones means road construction season is starting.

It's National Work Zone Awareness Week and officials at the Minnesota Department of Transportation want you to stay safe and keep their workers safe this summer.

Watch for signs and work zone flaggers, stay alert, avoid tailgaiting, eliminate distractions like cell phones, move over one lane if possible and follow posted speed limits.

There were 1,915 crashes in Minnesota work zones last year and 11 people died.

With 250 construction projects across the state this summer, MnDOT says it is important that we slow down and save lives.

Coming up later today, we'll run down what our local road construction projects will be after MnDOT officials and Governor Mark Dayton make the announcement in a St. Paul news conference.
