ST. PAUL (AP) - St. Paul fire authorities have rescued a teenager from a 300-foot-deep cave along the Mississippi River after hours of searching.

Fire Marshal Steve Zaccard says the 19-year-old man fell into a 20-foot cave shaft Sunday. He texted a friend saying he was trapped before his phone went dead.

Authorities received an emergency call around 1 a.m. Sunday. They heard the teen's calls for help around 5 a.m. He was taken to a hospital for treatment of minor injuries.

Zaccard says the text may have saved crews several hours of searching.

Crews stayed to search the entire cave out of concern that someone else might be inside. Crews had found an abandoned car near the teen's vehicle. They didn't find anyone else in the cave.
