ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) - St. Paul police say a man involved in a carjacking died in an exchange of gunfire with officers.

Sgt. Paul Paulos says the man crashed his vehicle into a fence Sunday afternoon. The man fired at bystanders before carjacking an SUV at gunpoint. Two people were in the vehicle at the time.

Paulos says the suspect shot at officers when they tried to stop him. Police fired back and shot the man. Paulos says he died on the way to the hospital.

Paulos says a teenage bystander suffered a non-life-threatening injury. He's being treated at Children's Hospital. Paulos says it's unclear if he was hit by a bullet or shrapnel.

He says two officers suffered minor injuries. Four officers involved were placed on three-day administrative leave, following standard policy.
