CARLTON - A Ramsey County sheriff's deputy caught on video striking his police dog has been ordered to pay a fine.

Brett Berry pleaded guilty last month to a misdemeanor charge of animal cruelty in Carlton County. Another misdemeanor - assault of a public safety dog - was dismissed at sentencing Wednesday.

The judge ordered Berry to pay more than $1,300 total for restitution, a fine, a fee and a surcharge. Berry also was sentenced to 90 days in jail but won't have to serve jail time if he follows several conditions, including not using or possessing alcohol or drugs.

Berry was staying at the Black Bear Casino and Resort with other sheriff's deputies for K-9 certification trials in June when security video showed him beating his K-9 partner, Boone.
