MAPLEWOOD (AP) - Police say a St. Paul man has died and another is in custody following an assault at a Twin Cities-area bar.

Maplewood police said Wednesday that Eduardo Alberto Figueroa died shortly after he was assaulted by two strangers Tuesday while he celebrated his 40th birthday.

Police responded to Freddy's Tiki Hut just before midnight. Figueroa told them he had been knocked down and kicked in the face and head while protecting his daughter. He refused medical treatment and said he would go to a hospital.

Figueroa had no pulse when emergency responders went to his home about an hour later. He was pronounced dead at the scene. An autopsy will be conducted.

Police arrested a 23-year old St. Paul man on suspicion of murder. They are searching for two other suspects who fled the bar.
