ST. PAUL (AP) — Minnesota is asking for federal aid after a round of severe storms cut through the state last month, tearing down trees and cutting power to more than 600,000 homes.

State disaster recovery experts estimate cleanup costs from the June 20 and June 21 storms could exceed the $7.26 million minimum to be considered for federal funding. Minnesota Homeland Security and Emergency Management director Kris Eide says the damage to public infrastructure could cost as much as $12 million.

Teams from the Federal Emergency Management Agency will arrive in Minnesota next week to begin assessing damage in more than a dozen counties.
