Minnesota Lawmakers Tilt Toward Session Finish

  ST. PAUL (AP) - Minnesota lawmakers are back in action after a week away from the Capitol, but their annual session is rapidly winding down.

Fewer than four weeks remain before lawmakers must conclude their work. Democratic majorities are hoping to finalize plans for the remaining budget surplus with a mixture of new spending and additional tax relief. They also are trying to cobble together enough votes to pass a construction borrowing plan of $850 million or more.

The borrowing bill requires Republican votes for the needed supermajority, so the GOP has more leverage than usual.

The session must end by May 19, but many around the Capitol are banking on a quicker finish.
