MINNEAPOLIS (AP) -- The police chief of Minneapolis has canceled her scheduled appearance at a community listening session, citing threats of disruptions.

Police Chief Janee Harteau was scheduled to appear Thursday evening at the Sabathani Community Center in Minneapolis.

But Harteau announced late in the afternoon she has canceled her appearance "in the best interest of community public safety."

In a statement, Harteau says police had received "credible information from a long-standing community member," as well as other sources, about "planned physical disruptions" at the session.

She says the threats appeared on social media forums.

Minneapolis City Council member Alondra Cano, who organized the event, posted on Facebook that she's disappointed the chief won't attend, but the session is going ahead as planned.
