ST. CLOUD -- A St. Cloud man has been sentenced to seven years in prison for holding his ex-girlfriend and her son at gunpoint.

23-year-old Nimesh Patel had pleaded guilty to first degree burglary, kidnapping and second degree assault charges in exchange that three other charges be dropped.

According to the criminal complaint, Patel was planning to kill his former girlfriend, her son and her new boyfriend. Despite an order for protection out against him, Patel went to her Waite Park apartment in October 2010, held the mother and son captive for hours. She was able to talk him into leaving the apartment and leaving them unharmed.

Patel called police the next day and officers shot him during a standoff in east St. Cloud.
