MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — A man who fell through thin ice on a Maple Grove pond has died.

According to the Hennepin County medical examiner, 20-year-old Andrew Pitts of Brooklyn Center died shortly before 10 p.m. Friday.

The sheriff's office said someone called 911 at about 8:05 p.m. Friday after a witness saw Pitts fall in the pond. He was pulled from the water more than an hour later and was unconscious. He died at a local hospital.

The medical examiner's office listed the cause of death as drowning.

At the time, people were outside because of the warm weather in the area, which has walking and bicycle paths.

Sheriff's office spokeswoman Lisa Kiava says detectives are trying to determine what prompted him to go on the pond.
