Man Dies After Fall Through Ice In Aitkin County

AITKIN (AP) — A man has died after the ATV he was driving broke through thin ice on a lake in east-central Minnesota.

The Aitkin County Sheriff's Office says 62-year-old Darrel Edward Piispanen was driving the ATV on Wednesday afternoon on Gun Lake when it went through the ice. Authorities found Piispanen in about 6 to 7 feet of water. He died Wednesday night at a local hospital.

The ice on the lake was about 1 inch thick where Piispanen broke through. It was more than 6 inches in other areas.
