ST. CLOUD -- The Great River Regional Library is giving local kids a chance to erase their library fines this week.

Read Down Your Fines Week starts today at all branches of the Great River Regional Library.

From today through Saturday, children under the age of 16 will have the chance to erase whatever fines they have at the library with one dollar taken off for every 15 minutes spent reading.

Very young children can have their fines reduced by having their parents read to them.

Read Down Your Fines Week is supported by fundraising - which ensures the loss of fines will not have a negative effect on budgets.

This is the third-ever Read Down Your Fines initiative.

The first two were held last year, resulting in about 400 kids reading their fines down to zero and becoming eligible to check out library materials again.
