ST. CLOUD - A former St. Cloud City Council member is speaking out and telling her personal story of mental illness.  Lori Long says she first started noticing some symptoms back in 2006.

Long says despite the therapy sessions and medications, her mental illness continued to get worse.

Long says her doctors recommended she undergo electric shock therapy -- or electroconvulsive therapy -- which today is not what it was years ago.  She says those treatments have helped her, and she says with medications and continued therapy she had learned to manage her mental health.

Long is sharing her story now because May is Mental Health Awareness Month.

The organization Mental Health America says one in four Americans are living with a diagnosable, treatable mental health condition.
