Fishing To Start Late On Certain Northeast Minnesota Waters

ST. PAUL  (AP) -- The fishing season will get off to a late start on certain northeastern Minnesota lakes and streams because of the cold winter.

The Department of Natural Resources says the expected late ice-out dates will mean delayed spawning. So some lakes and rivers along the Minnesota-Ontario border in Cook County will be closed to fishing to protect spawning walleyes until May 27, or in some cases through Memorial Day weekend until May 31.

All areas closed to fishing will be posted, but they include the Sea Gull River from Sea Gull Lake through Gull Lake to Saganaga Lake and some other waters in or near the Boundary Waters Canoe Area. A full list is posted on the DNR's web site.

Minnesota's main walleye season opens May 14.
