ST. PAUL (AP) -- Firefighters have rescued a 19-year-old man from a 300-foot deep cave along the Mississippi River bluffs in St. Paul.

Authorities say the man fell into a 20-foot shaft that led to the cave early Sunday. He texted a friend to say he was trapped before his phone went dead.

Rescuers found the man around 5 a.m. and used harnesses to pull him to safety. Fire Marshal Steve Zaccard says the text may have saved crews several hours of searching

The man was taken to Regions Hospital with minor injuries. His name was not immediately released.

Firefighters searched the cave to make sure nobody else was there.

Zaccard says the caves along the bluffs are dangerous and can contain carbon monoxide. The city tries to keep them sealed off.
