Relative Foster Care and Adoption Webinar

May 24, 2022 webinar will explain how relatives and kin can become involved in child welfare cases and be taken seriously as placement alternatives for children, when residing with a parent is not an option.

On May 24, 2022, from 9:00a.m. to 12:10 p.m. CDT, nonprofit legal education provider Echion CLE will be hosting a 3-hour webinar on Relative Foster Care and Adoption. For those who are unable to attend that day, there will be a video replay on June 10, 2022 (9:00 to 12:10 CDT).

The course will feature presentations by three experts in the field.

Kelis Houston is the founder of Village Arms, a non-profit organization that works with families that are involved in child welfare proceedings. She will talk about the role that racial bias plays in these proceedings and the harmful effects that severing ties with both immediate and extended family can have for children. She will also talk about a new county cultural liaison pilot program in which she is involved.

Rhia Spears, JD, is a family law attorney who has a great deal of experience with child welfare proceedings and the involvement of relatives/kin in them. She will explain the process, the applicable legal standards, how to make a relative a serious placement option, dealing with bias, mediation, and appeals.

Misty Coonce, LISW will round out the program with a talk about home studies and foster care licensing. Ms. Coonce is the senior program director at Ampersand Families, an adoption/foster agency with a special interest in difficult-to-place children.

Echion has applied to the Minnesota Board of Continuing Legal Education for approval of the course for 3.0 CLE credits for attorneys, including 1 Elimination of Bias credit. Cost: $75.

Echion is an independent legal education provider. It is not affiliated with any bar association, law school, or government office.
