Additional Information

The Litchfield Wetland Management District of the US Fish & Wildlife Service will host “Habitat Day 2018” on Saturday, April 7th, from 12:00 - 4:00pm in Litchfield. The event has a variety of offerings for all ages who are interested in wildlife and habitat in our area. This event is free!

We are excited to announce a new program for this year’s Habitat Day event. The Minnesota Zoomobile will host their Cool Animals of the North presentation at 12:30pm. This program uses a variety of live animals native to our state and will educate the public about ecological concepts unique to Minnesota while instilling a sense of environmental stewardship towards the global ecosystem. After the presentation the Minnesota Zoomobile will be hosting an interactive table and open discussion from about 2:15 - 3:15pm. The Monarch Lab through the University of Minnesota will also have a table where you can do hands on activities from 12:00 - 4:00pm. Be sure to visit them both!

Spring is just around the corner and it won’t be long before wood ducks and bluebirds return to the area in search of nesting sites. If you have good habitat areas for placing nest boxes for these species, free, pre-cut bird house kits will be available for assembly on site (one of each per family). Bat boxes, robin nesting shelves, wren houses, and bird feeders will also be available while supplies last. All necessary tools to assemble the houses will be provided. Staff and volunteers will be on hand to assist with construction. Information packets will be provided for nest house placement. Design plans will be available to build these houses or feeders on your own. Come build a house anytime between 12:00 - 4:00pm!

Coloring books, posters, and an assortment of wildlife related materials and educational displays for all ages will be available throughout the afternoon. Special guests at the event include the Wildlife Wizard who will quiz children and adults on the wildlife and habitat of the area as well as Pheasants Forever, Inc., FWS Partners Program, MN Honey Producers Association, and FWS Migratory Birds who will have staffed booths.
