UNDATED -- As you prepare to head out for Minnesota's fishing opener this weekend, the DNR is reminding you to pack your life jackets, first-aid kit and sunscreen.

But, the DNR says there is just as much to remember when you are ready to leave the lake.  Conservation officer Mike Martin says take out all of the boat's plugs, empty the water in the bilge, live well and minnow buckets.  he says invasive species have been spreading more rapidly in recent years and the DNR wants everyone to help stop the spread of those organisms.

Martin also says be sure your license and registration is current, use common courtesy at the boat landings and have working navigation lights on your boat.

But, Martin says the single-most important thing to remember is that the water is still very cold and wearing a life jacket could save your life.
