DNR Raises Walleye Limit for Upper Red Lake This Winter

ST. PAUL (AP) - Officials have raised the walleye limit for anglers on Upper Red Lake this winter, and those fish can be from a broader size range.

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources says the daily limit will be three walleye, one of which may be longer than 17 inches. Last winter, anglers could keep two walleye from Upper Red Lake. While one could be longer than 26 inches, all walleye 17 to 26 inches had to be released.

DNR Bemidji area fisheries supervisor Gary Barnard says Red Lake is in excellent shape, with large numbers of walleyes from 12 to 21 inches.

The DNR and the Red Lake Nation manage the lake under a joint harvest plan. The walleye fishery reopened in 2006 after being closed in the 1990s due to overfishing.
