Crews Install 2nd Of 9 Asian Carp Barriers

COON RAPIDS (AP) - Construction crews are trying to stay ahead of the icy, cold winter weather as they work to install five gates at the Coon Rapids dam before the end of the year.

The steel gates are part of a $16 million improvement project aimed at preventing Asian carp from leaping over the dam and reaching the upper Mississippi River watershed.

On Monday two huge cranes lifted and slid into place the second of nine gates to be installed at the dam.

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources says a dead silver carp was recently found at a dam north of Winona, the furthest upstream the fish has been discovered in the Mississippi River.
