Cook County Courthouse Shooting Suspect Dies

DULUTH, Minn. (AP) - A man accused of shooting and wounding a Cook County prosecutor and witness has died in a Duluth hospital.

St. Louis County Undersheriff Dave Phillips tells reporters that Daniel Schlienz had been ill and died Tuesday morning.

The 42-year-old was charged Dec. 19 in district court in Duluth with two counts of attempted first-degree premeditated murder.

The criminal complaint says after Schlienz was convicted in a sex case, he retrieved a gun from his vehicle. He then shot Cook County Attorney Tim Scannell and Grand Marais resident Gregory Thompson inside the Grand Marais courthouse Dec. 15. Both were hospitalized for five days.

Schlienz was being held on $2 million bail.
