MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Police used tear gas to break up fights involving protesters outside a University of Minnesota building where a politically conservative speaker from Canada was giving an address.

University spokesman Evan Lapiska says police used the chemical irritant three times on some of the 200 to 250 protesters Wednesday night. One person was arrested for disorderly conduct. Protesters carried banners, including one that read ``Minnesota against white supremacy.''

The appearance of 22-year-old Lauren Southern, an author and activist from British Columbia, was hosted by Collegians For A Constructive Tomorrow Minnesota.
