Coaching Legend Dean Taylor Passes Away
St. Cloud area coaching legend Dean Taylor passed away Thursday morning at the age of 70.
Memorial Services will be at 2:00 p.m. Sunday at the Sartell High School Gymnasium. Visitation will continue from 3:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at the high school. Arrangements have been entrusted to Williams Dingmann Family Funeral Home in Sauk Rapids.
Taylor grew up on a small family farm in Elysian and graduated from Waterville/Elysian High School. He went on to play college football and graduate from Mankato State University.
His first teaching and coaching position was at Truman High School from 1967-1969 before becoming a history and social teacher at Sartell.
Taylor founded Sartell football in 1969 and coached there until the Sabres' 1994 Clas A championship season. He went on to coach at St. John's University from 1999-2008 under John Gagliardi before finishing his career with a stint at Cathedral from 2009-2012
In addition to coaching, Taylor also umpired for many years and volunteered at local tournaments and events.
