The Gopher men's basketball team rallied at the end of regulation and beat Illinois 77-72 in overtime Saturday night. Minnesota got a conventional 3-point play from Austin Hollins with 6 seconds left and Minnesota took control of the game in overtime. Hollins and Chip Armelin each had 14 points to lead the Gophers and Andre Hollins added 12 points for Minnesota.

The 3rd ranked Gopher men's hockey team defeated St. Cloud State 3-2 Saturday night to complete a sweep of SCSU. Saturday night's win over SCSU for Minnesota came in St. Cloud. Sam Warning scored the game-winning goal for the Gophers to break a 2-all tie in the 3rd period. Ben Hanowski tied the game at 2 in the 2nd period and Hanowski scored the first SCSU goal in the 1st period.

Whether I am working bluegill on a flat or crappie in a deep basin, I am not the type of person that likes to set up a house and wait for the fish to come to me. On the contrary, I am going to go to the fish. I spend a considerable amount of time on the ice each winter and have learned some valuable lessons about the catching aspect of fishing. Simply put, you can’t catch fish that are not there.

The Timberwolves won 87-79 at home against San Antonio Spurs Friday night. Kevin Love led the Wolves with 18 points and 16 rebounds and Ricky Rubio had 18 points and 10 assists. Nikola Pekovic had 14 points and 10 rebounds as he earned the start. Minnesota outrebounded San Antonio 46-34.

The St. Cloud State men's hockey team lost 2-1 at Mariucci Arena in Minneapolis to 3rd ranked Minnesota Friday night. Ben Hanowski scored the lone SCSU goal and Nick Bjugstad scored the game-winning goal for the Gophers in the 2nd period. Mike Lee made his return as goalie and had 24 saves.

The Twins will retire the number of longtime Twins manager Tom Kelly during the 2012 season. Kelly managed the Twins to 2 world series titles in 1987 and 1991. He managed the Twins from 1986-1998 and has served as a consultant in the Twins organization since 1998.

This winter by all accounts has been a mild one, but from time to time I still hear comments from people grumbling about the cold, or the snow, or both. Come on people we’re Minnesotans, we’re suppose to wear our pride of our long cold winters on our sleeves like a badge of honor. Our ability to survive the cold climate is what sets up apart from the whimps who live down south. So come on folks, join me in getting up off the couch, put on your parka, and participate in our Minnesota winter. Here’s a few suggestions:

The Twins Winter Caravan stopped in St. Cloud Wednesday night at Rivers Edge Convention Center. Current Twins players Denard Span, Ben Revere and Rene Tosoni were here along with former Twin Tony Oliva, broadcaster Dick Bremer and mascot T.C. Bear. The group signed autographs and held a program emceed by Bremer.

The Timberwolves won 105-90 at Dallas Wednesday night to improve to 2-0 against the defending NBA champs this season. Kevin Love led the Wolves with 31 points and 10 rebounds, Ricky Rubio added 17 points and 12 assists and Wayne Ellington added 16 points for Minnesota. The Wolves shot 44 percent from the field and played with just 9 healthy players.

The 10th ranked Michigan State Spartans routed the Gopher men's basketball team 68-52 Wednesday night in East Lansing, Michigan. Minnesota trailed by 10 at halftime and cut the lead to as close as 5 points in the 2nd half. Rodney Williams led the Gophers with 15 points and both Joe Coleman and Julian Welch each added 9 points.
