The incident happened at about 5:00 p.m. just off of Highway 10 in Big Lake.

Big Lake Police Chief Joel Scharf says Officer Chris Hoard was stopped on Industrial Drive, waiting for a driver reported to be driving recklessly, and possibly smoking marijuana, when he was hit by another car.

26-year-old Heath Woods, of Iowa, was traveling west on Highway 10, when he made an abrupt lane change, went through the intersection and hit Hoard broadside.

Scharf says further investigation found Woods had outstanding felony warrants in two states for burglary and property damage. In addition he is also facing charges of driving without insurance, driving without a license, failing to drive with care and felony possession of a controlled substance.

He was arrested and is currently being held in the Sherburne County Jail.
