MELROSE -- Crews fought a building fire in downtown Melrose yesterday (Thursday). The Melrose Police Department says crews were called to a building at the corner of Main Street and 4th Avenue shortly after 12:30 p.m..

Several businesses were on the ground level of the building with apartments above. The intense heat caused the roof on one of the building to collapse. Thick smoke and a few flames could be seen coming from the buildings hours later.

A number of people needed to be rescued from the upper level via ladder, but authorities believe no one is hurt.

Additional fire crews from Freeport and Sauk Centre were called in to assist.

The cause of the fire is unknown at this time.
