SANDSTONE, Minn. (AP) - Authorities say a toddler was rescued from a highway in east-central Minnesota after she wandered away from a day care where the provider was drunk.

The Pine County sheriff's office says the nearly 2-year-old girl was spotted about 3:30 p.m. Wednesday on State Highway 23 in Sandstone. A woman ran from her nearby home, removed the child from the road and notified authorities.

Sheriff Robin Cole says vehicles swerved to avoid the girl as she walked down the center line of the highway.

Reports say the provider's operator was questioned and found to be drunk.

Authorities immediately closed the in-home day care. The name of the facility wasn't released.

The sheriff says the day-care provider was not arrested but could be charged as soon as this week.
