Gopher men's basketball head coach Tubby Smith says he plans to stay at the University of Minnesota and is working on a contract extension with Athletic Director Joel Maturi.  Reports had indicated that Tubby Smith was set to replace John Pelphrey at the University of Arkansas.  Smith has also been rumored as a candidate at Georgia Tech.  The Gophers lost 10 of their last 11 games and finished the season with a 17-14 record.  Smith received a verbal comittment from junior college point guard Julian Welch of Yuba Community College in California this weekend to play for the Gophers starting next season.  Welch averaged 18 points and 5 assists a game playing primarily point guard.  He is expected to play point guard for the Gophers.  Minnesota is also recruiting 6'8 power foward Henry Brooks of Lithonia, Georgia, 6'8 power forward Nemanja Djurisis of South Kent, Connecticut and 6'1 guard Stephen Keese of Fort Gibson, Oklahoma.
