Saturday marks the end of the one-month moratorium on Lake Mille Lacs walleye fishing.

It is during the late winter period when the snow starts to melt and the ice is going out that my thoughts drift to summer and open water fishing.

Being able to play the bite with little resistance to the fish is absolutely critical.

For some reason, we seemed to be hooking a higher number fish that were over 20 inches.

It was a hard thing to understand. According to my electronics, the large, rocky reef we were targeting was littered with scattered pods of fish. From previous experiences at this location, we were certain the arcs on the screen were walleye. We just couldn’t make them bite.
