The Buckman Billygoats downed Luverne 4-0 Saturday in Faribault to advance in the Class C State Amateur Baseball tournament. The Avon Lakers posted a 2-1 win over St. Martin Sunday in Miesville to stamp their ticket for the final 16 in Class C as well.
The first weekend of the State Amateur Baseball tournament took place this past weekend. Ten Central Minnesota teams participated in the Class C tournament over the weekend with 2 area teams getting a first round bye.
Amateur baseball fans headed to Watkins this weekend will notice some familiar seats. The newly renovated baseball park includes 287 seats from the old Metrodome. Spokesman Bruce Geislinger says they've spent $300,000 on upgrades in preparation for the Class B and Class C Amateur Baseball State Tournaments.
The Cold Spring Springers lost 5-3 and 4-1 to the Victoria Vics in the Class B State Amateur Baseball championship games Monday in St. Cloud at Dick Putz Field. The Springers needed just 1 win on the day while Victoria needed two. Ryan Morse took the loss in game one with Garrett Fuchs going 2-4 with 2 RBIs for the Springers. Zach Femrite took the loss for the Springers in Game 2. Cold Spring managed just 6 hits in game 2.
Avon defeated Lamberton 8-1 in the Class C State Amateur Baseball tournament in St. Cloud Sunday to survive. Neil Manthe had 2 hits and 2 runs scored and Rick Hendrickson had 2 hits, 2 runs scored and 1 RBI for Avon. Avon will play Cannon Falls in the 3rd round of the Class C State tournament at 11am Saturday at Faber Field.
