It will likely be at least another year before we see any development on the former Sartell paper mill site. The Sartell city council has unanimously approved a one-year moratorium of any new development on three general areas near the river: the paper mill site, parts of DeZurik and the hydro facility.
The Sartell Paper Mill Art Project is pushing forward. The artist have been working on their contributions. Now a crowd sourcing campaign has been started to raise money to get these projects installed in their final locations.
Almost three years after the Verso Paper Mill fire in Sartell, a group of artists are getting closer to paying tribute to the mill, and its workers. Public art projects, using the paper mill's original pieces, are currently being built, and are set to go into Watab Park, and Val Smith Park this summer. The projects range from silhouettes of the mill, to park benches, and bike racks. Lead Artist Heidi Jeub tells us more about the project.
An event is being planned for this Monday to observe the one-year anniversary of the explosion and fire at the Verso Paper Mill. The event will start at about 10:30 a.m. at Veterans Park, following the traditional Memorial Day Ceremony at 9:00 a.m.
Officials with American Iron & Metal visited Sartell recently to tour the site of the closed paper mill. AIM is buying the property and is expected to close on the sale Friday.
The buyers of the closed Sartell paper mill will likely have to have an environmental assessment done on the property as part of any redevelopment plans.
