Minnesota cabin owners could be in line for a big tax cut. House Republicans are proposing to eliminate the statewide property taxes on cabins. Minnesota levies that tax on cabins as if they were businesses, meaning they're taxed at a higher rate than normal homes. The tax has generated about $44 million each year for the state.
A proposal from a bipartisan group of Minnesota lawmakers would divert money from two environmental funds to pay for schools, roads and other local needs.
The first batch of bills in the Minnesota House will attempt to whittle away at state IOUs to schools, give more property taxpayers rebates, install a health care insurance exchange and prop up investment grant programs.
