A group of 4th graders in the St. Cloud, Sauk Rapids and Sartell school districts are getting a special opportunity to be part of the Governor's Fishing Opener.

Plans for the 70th annual Minnesota Governor's Fishing Opener continue to take shape. Events will get underway on Thursday, May 11th with a golf outing and the "Taste of Downtown St. Cloud".

Several Sauk Rapids business owners are planning a fun event on the Saturday of the Governor's Fishing Opener. They wanted to have the event because a lot of people are expected to be fishing that day along the shoreline of the Mississippi River in Sauk Rapids.

There's less than two months to go until the Governor's Fishing Opener comes to the St. Cloud Metro Area. The 70th annual event runs from Thursday, May 11th through Sunday, May 13th.

St. Cloud has never hosted the Minnesota Governor's Fishing Opener in its 69 years. But, tourism officials are hopeful that changes for the 70th annual event next year.

Downtown St. Cloud is bidding to host the 2017 Governor's Fishing Opener. Julie Lunning is the Executive Director of the St. Cloud Area Convention and Visitors Bureau. She says they have a unique proposal to host the opener on three stretches of the Mississippi River.

Minnesota tourism officials say a longtime tradition promoting one of the state's most popular pastimes will be hosted by the Brainerd Lakes Area Chamber in 2014. The 67th annual Governor's Fishing Opener will be on Gull Lake next year with the Grand View Lodge in Nisswa serving as the event's headquarters.

Next year's Governor's Fishing Opener will be held in the Park Rapids area in northwest Minnesota. The Explore Minnesota Tourism office made the announcement late Saturday.
