Flying drones in Waite Park just got some guidelines

Maybe the drone show will become a new tradition that the Twins will put on each year...

After implementing body camera's nearly a year ago, the Benton County Sheriff's Office is now adding a drone.

Nearly half a dozen buzzing, unmanned flying machines circled southeast St. Cloud’s Selke Field on Tuesday afternoon.

Stearns County Attorney Janelle Kendall joined me on WJON today. She discussed their county planning efforts, the possibility of scheduling courts differently, where forfeiture and fine dollars go, legalizing marijuana and drones at festivals.

Drones and remote controlled vehicle racing has become increasingly popular in Central Minnesota over the last few years. Baker’s Hobbytown is going all-out to accommodate the growing number of hobbyists by building a massive indoor dome in Waite Park.

Drones may soon be the latest piece of equipment the Stearns County Sheriff's Office will have at their disposal. The Sheriff's Office and the St. Cloud Police department are applying for the $32,000 Justice Assistance Grant for new equipment including a drone.

Drones are one of the hottest Christmas gifts in the country this year and the St. Cloud metro area is no exception. Jason Wester is a manager at Baker's Hobbytown in Waite Park. He says they've seen a steady rise in drone sales during the holidays.

Xcel Energy says it has approval from federal regulators to use drones to inspect more than 320,000 miles of electric and natural gas infrastructure.

Changes in law enforcement surveillance and internal investigations are on the docket at the Legislature.
