Deer harvest numbers are down overall throughout the state but Central Minnesota is an exception to that. The muzzleloader season continues through Sunday (December 10) and the archery season continues through December 31. Glen Schmitt from Outdoor News joined me on WJON.

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources says deer hunters should have ample chances to bag a whitetail when the firearms season opens Saturday.

More deer have been harvested at this point of the season compared to last year at this time. The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources says hunters shot and registered more than 118,000 deer through the second weekend of the firearms season, up from just under 105,000 last year during the two week period.

Minnesota hunters have harvested more deer in the first three days of the firearms season compared to last year.

The DNR is saying the 2014 deer harvest will be one of the lowest in decades.

Minnesota's deer harvest declined in 2012 but officials say it was a safe season for people who took to the woods. Final numbers released Monday show that Minnesota hunters killed nearly 185,000 deer, down 4 percent from 2011.

Good weather and Veterans Day falling on a Friday are being credited for improved hunter success after a slow start to Minnesota's firearms deer season.
