Longtime Cathedral boys hockey assistant coach Ron Brown was named the Minnesota State Assistant Coach of the Year. Brown helped the Crusaders to a fourth place finish in the 2014 boys hockey state tournament.

Brown has been an assistant at CHS for the past 34 years. After serving with the National Guard in Kuwait, Brown returned home to work for a local telephone company. Upon retirement, Brown took a job in maintenance at Cathedral. That gig allows him to structure his days around the hockey teams' practices.

Ron and his wife, Jane, host frequent team meals at their home throughout the season, known affectionately by the team as "Brownie Meals." Jane was the video coordinator for CHS hockey for most of Ron's 34 years with the team.

Brown, a Browerville native, not only had the opportunity to coach his sons at the school but now has the chance to coach his grandson as well in Crusaders sophomore defenseman Sam Medvec.

"Ron has been THE constant in our hockey program since 1980.  He has served as a mentor, role model, and friend for hundreds of young men," said Cathedral Activities Director Emmett Keenan.  "His dedication to Cathedral and to our Boys' Hockey program is unmatched.  No one is more deserving of this award."
