Most Remote Hotel In Minnesota Is Actually North Of Canada
There's a place in Minnesota where you can spend the night and actually be north of Canada. How's that even possible? This hotel is so remote that the only way to get there is by boat.
Kettle Falls Hotel
The Kettle Falls Hotel is located in the Voyageurs National Park. It's the only hotel in the park, and it was constructed before the vast wilderness became a National Park.
Construction began in 1910 by a timber baron, and the hotel was used by traveling traders who would canoe in from Canada. It housed lumberjacks and fishermen, too.
Bootlegger Hub During Prohibition
During the prohibition era, bootleggers would bring in vast quantities of liquor from Canada and smuggle it into the US through the Kettle Falls Hotel. Some of that liquor would eventually make it to the mob in Chicago. Yes, think of Al Capone in Chicago. Undoubtedly, some of his liquor came through this area.
Al Capone also had a hideout in Northern Minnesota. There are still remnants of the foundation hidden in the trees.

It's Located North Of Canada
How is it possible that a hotel in Minnesota could actually be north of Canada? Take a look at the map. The Canadian border is jagged, and there's a little finger of land that Kettle Falls Hotel sits on.
The only way to get there is by boat.
The Kettle Falls Hotel is only accessible by boat. If you're going to visit Voyageurs National Park, make sure you bring a boat. Every campsite is only accessible by waterway. It's what makes this park so pristine and wild.

Have A Drink At The Tiltin' Hilton
The floor of the bar is so slanted that it's called the Tiltin' Hilton. It's by design, and it's safe. Watch your step. It's a noticeable slant.
